The Airfix 1/24 Scale Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc – “Flying Dray” is a fantastic large-scale project that combines serious modelling with one of WWII’s most memorable morale-boosting stories.
This 1/24 kit lets you build your own beer-carrying Spitfire, replicating the improvised “beer runs” flown to thirsty troops in Normandy after D-Day. With 448 parts, a length of 397mm and a wingspan of 469mm, it’s a substantial, detail-rich project aimed at experienced modellers or anyone ready for a long-term build with real display presence.
Airfix and Hobbies have leaned into the story with some great extras. As well as the core Mk.IXc, you get additional resin parts to tell the “Flying Dray” story properly: two beer barrels with lids, two nose cones, two bomb racks and a slipper tank. On top of that, every kit comes with an Airfix pint glass so you can literally raise a glass while you build.
Historically, these beer-carrying sorties were unofficial and rarely recorded as such in logbooks, but photos, pilot memoirs and period newspaper stories helped turn them into legend. For a brief window in 1944, Spitfires became airborne drays – delivering a taste of home and a morale boost to the front lines.
If you enjoy big 1/24 subjects, strong narrative builds and kits that really stand out in a cabinet, the Flying Dray Spitfire is a great addition to the bench.
